Crying is the point here, not a side effect. If you wanted to sit quietly with it there is a room for that; this one is for letting go of it.
The distinction is real and it changes what belongs. Gham is the mood you sit inside. Rone wale gane are the songs that break it open - the ones with the held note, the key change, the line that arrives about two-thirds through and is worse than everything before it. You do not put these on to feel steady. You put them on because feeling steady has stopped working.
Agar Tum Saath Ho does this more reliably than anything else recorded in the last fifteen years. A. R. Rahman wrote it for Tamasha in 2015, Irshad Kamil wrote the words, and it is sung as an argument between two people - Alka Yagnik and Arijit Singh talking past each other rather than harmonising. The moment it turns is not the chorus. It is the second time she comes back in.
Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le, from Sadma in 1983, is the older one that does the same job with a quarter of the volume. Then Tujhe Bhula Diya, Zaroori Tha, Kabira, Tum Hi Ho, Judaai - the modern set, which is what most people mean when they search for this, and there is no reason to be sniffy about it. A song that works on a twenty-three-year-old at midnight is doing exactly what Sadma did in 1983.
One practical thing. This is a bad playlist to leave running for three hours and a very good one to leave running for forty minutes. It is built to bring something to a head, not to keep it there. When you are done, gham is the same lighting with a longer set and a gentler slope, and the ghazals in it will let you sit down again.
The most commonly named are Agar Tum Saath Ho from Tamasha, Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le from Sadma, Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye from Anand, Tadap Tadap from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Channa Mereya. Which one works depends less on the song than on which decade you were twenty in.
Agar Tum Saath Ho, Zaroori Tha, Judaai, Tujhe Bhula Diya and Tum Hi Ho on the Hindi side; Ranjish Hi Sahi, Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo and Chupke Chupke Raat Din on the ghazal side. After midnight most listeners stop separating the two languages, and there is no good reason to.
Rone wale gane are songs meant to produce crying rather than describe sadness. They are built around a release - a held note, a key change, a line that lands late - while general sad songs can stay level throughout. In practice one playlist is for catharsis and the other is for company.
