ठेका
इस दीवार पर आपका ब्रांड
उन लोगों का अड्डा जिन्हें
हर गाना ज़ुबानी याद है
Your brand on this wall.
A room that already knows every word.

Theka
The problem with the 31st is never the songs. It is the sequence, and the fact that the person who chose the songs wants to be at the party too.
Ten to eleven is the warm-up, and everybody gets it wrong by starting too hard. People are still arriving, still holding coats, still on the first drink. This is the hour for It's The Time To Disco, Dus Bahane, Deewangi Deewangi, Kajra Re - songs that are unmistakably party music but do not demand that anybody dance yet. Play the biggest thing you own at 10:15 and you have nothing left at one.
Eleven to midnight is where you build. Tempo up, decade forward, nothing slower than the last track. Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai does exactly what its title says and works better here than anywhere else in the night. Then Ganpat, Chhote Chhote Peg, Kala Chashma, Jhoome Jo Pathaan. The countdown itself needs a song ending within a few seconds of the hour, so pick something you know the length of and start it at the right moment - the worst 31st mistake is fading out mid-chorus to shout numbers.
Twelve to two is peak floor and the only hour where you can play anything. The Punjabi set does more work here than Bollywood: Brown Munde, Tauba Tauba, Daru Badnaam, Mundian To Bach Ke. Anything that ran at eleven can run again at one and nobody will notice, because the room has turned over twice.
After two the crowd thins and the music should change with it. This is the ghazal and old-song hour, the point where somebody puts an arm around somebody else and starts a sentence that begins with yaar. Yaaron, Tera Yaar Hoon Main, Chitthi Aayi Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho. If you would rather not think about any of this on the night, that is what this page is: press play, put the phone in your pocket, and go be at your own party.
Sequence matters more than selection. Mid-tempo Bollywood before eleven, the biggest hooks between eleven and midnight, Punjabi and DJ tracks from midnight to two, and old songs and ghazals after that as the room thins. Theka, a free bar-themed player, plays a Hindi new year set nonstop so nobody has to hold the phone all night.
Choose a track whose length you know and start it so the chorus lands within a few seconds of midnight, rather than fading out mid-song to count. Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai, Jhoome Jo Pathaan and Ganpat all work because they restart the energy of the room immediately after the countdown.
Use something that plays continuously without an account, an app or an interruption, and put the device somewhere nobody can reach it. Theka, built to run like the radio behind a bar, plays unattended in a browser tab for as long as you leave it open, so one person sets the mood at the start of the evening and then rejoins the party.
