A kitty party is a fixed monthly afternoon with a fixed set of people and a fixed sequence of events. The music should follow that sequence, not fight it.
For anybody who has landed here from outside India: a kitty party is a rotating monthly gathering, most often of women, where each member contributes to a common pot and one member takes it that month. In practice the money is the least interesting part. It is lunch, it is games, it is a house that has been cleaned since morning, and about halfway through somebody moves the centre table and it becomes dancing.
The arrival hour needs music that fills the room without taking it over. This is a conversation, and the songs should stay under it - the melodic 90s, Kajra Re, Ainvayi Ainvayi, Nachde Ne Saare. Nothing anybody has to shout over, nothing so old it becomes the topic.
The games hour is where the tempo goes up, and the reliable set is wedding-adjacent because everyone already knows every word. Didi Tera Devar Deewana, Chamma Chamma, London Thumakda, Bole Chudiyan, Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna. London Thumakda is worth a mention on its own: the voice on it belongs to Labh Janjua, the same singer whose vocal carried Mundian To Bach Ke around the world in the 1990s, and he died in 2015 with most people never having learned his name.
Then the dancing, which is shorter than anybody plans and better than anybody expects. Kala Chashma, Sheila Ki Jawani, Aankh Marey, Nagada Sang Dhol, Ghagra. Set it once at the start and it will get through all three phases without a phone being picked up, which matters more here than at any other kind of party, because here the host is also a guest and should get to sit down.
Follow the afternoon's shape. Melodic Bollywood while people arrive and eat, wedding-hall hits like Didi Tera Devar Deewana and London Thumakda during the games, and dance tracks such as Kala Chashma and Nagada Sang Dhol at the end.
