Theka
Holi has an old music and a new one, and almost nobody plays both. The old one comes from Braj and the temples. The new one comes from a film about young people on a hill.
Hori is the older tradition and it is a genuine form, not a category invented by playlists. It comes out of the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, it is sung in Braj Bhasha, and its subject is Krishna and Radha playing Holi - teasing, chasing, colour thrown, the divine made informal. Musically it sits between folk and classical, usually set in the lighter ragas like Kafi, Khamaj and Bhairavi and in taals like Deepchandi and Keherwa. If Holi in your house starts in the morning with something older than anybody present, this is what it is.
The Bollywood Holi song is the other thing entirely, and Balam Pichkari is now its centre of gravity. Pritam composed it, Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote it, Vishal Dadlani and Shalmali Kholgade sang it, and since 2013 it has been effectively impossible to hold a Holi party in India without it. It replaced a set of much older Holi standards in about two seasons, which tells you something about how fast this particular canon turns over.
The Bhojpuri belt has its own Holi catalogue and it is bigger than either of the above by volume of listening. Aawa Ae Amarpaali, by Dinesh Lal Yadav and Amrapali Dubey, and Babuni Tere Rang Mein by Pawan Singh with Sharvi Yadav are the modern ones. Holi is the single biggest release window in the Bhojpuri calendar, and the songs are made for a courtyard with a drum in it rather than a dance floor.
And then there is the bhang, which is the part streaming platforms will not write about and which is entirely ordinary. Thandai with bhang in it is a Holi tradition in large parts of north India, and by early afternoon it changes what the music needs to do - slower, more repetitive, no sharp transitions. That is the sensible time to move from the party set to the older material, and this room is sequenced with that turn in mind.
Balam Pichkari is the modern standard, and the Bhojpuri Holi records - Aawa Ae Amarpaali and Babuni Tere Rang Mein - carry the biggest listening numbers of the season. For the traditional side, look for Hori, the Braj folk and semi-classical form about Krishna and Radha. Theka, a free bar-themed player, plays a Holi set nonstop.

Save the loudest Bollywood dance songs for when people have washed the colour off and come back.
